Johannesburg Snapshots [Maboneng + Melville]

This past week marked my first week in South Africa.  I arrived in Johannesburg on Saturday, and have had a week full of many amazing encounters.  Since I have arrived, I have had somewhat of a whirlwind of experiences ranging from guided tours of Soweto, Alexandra, and Houghton, among many other areas of the greater City of Johannesburg. On Monday this week, I explored two areas in particular, Maboneng and Melville.  Below, I have captured a few snapshots from my time within the two areas.  Maboneng, translating to Place of Light, is a newer privately-developed neighborhood with many art galleries, shops and restaurants.  Loft style residential housing buildings as well as and commercial buildings also filled the area.  Overall, it was a new, vibrant portion of the city that was fun to walk through and explore the different studios and galleries.  One studio that I enjoyed was David Krut Project, a print making studio.  Similarly in Melville, varying shops lined the streets where one could find beautiful heritage clothing in an array of colors alongside some well-known local eateries. One of the most famous of these was Poppy, included in the images below. More about Maboneng at this link.

I am having a blast here and will be updating more about my trip within the next weeks on my blog.  Thank you for reading and have a great weekend!
